MIT and FIT Advanced Fiber Workshop

Description

During the second consecutive year, students from each institution teamed up for two weeks in late June to create product concepts exploring the use of advanced fibers and technology.

The Challenge

Live for Tomorrow/Unexpected Performance

In 2013, New Balance launched a collection of apparel and footwear designed for nighttime visibility called the Beacon collection.

How might we update the New Balance Beacon collection to best reflect the changing technological/biological landscape?  

Six years later, what new input technologies enhance/provide new capabilities  

How will tomorrow’s environment be different from yesterday’s?

Week 1 at MIT

Day 1: Overview of AFFOA Technology and MIT introduction

Day 2: Embedding Biosensors in Porous Substrates

Day 3: Introduction to Fiber Science and Technology, Fiber Drawing and Advanced Fiber Devices 

Day 4: Developing project concept and design

Day 5: Visit To New Balance Innovation Lab & Initial prototype presentation

Week 2 at FIT

Day 6: FIT Introduction, 3D Design, and Branding through Design

Day 7: Integration of advanced functional fibers through knit architectures

Day 8: Integration of advanced fibers through weaving and embroidery techniques 

Day 9: Sneaker & Apparel prototyping 

Day 10: Poster and Prototype Presentation
