Andy Liu
Andy Liu is a tenured professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, ranked number one in the world in 2019 by CEOWORLD magazine.
Since 2015 his research has been in the application of technology in design. Andy works closely with FIT’s innovation lab, Dtech, mentoring students through interdisciplinary projects in partnership with industry such as using artificial intelligence to inform the design process and improve the supply chain. The product of this collaboration created with IBM Watson and Tommy Hilfiger was featured in the 2018 National Retail Federation show and covered by prestige magazines such Womenswear Daily and Forbes. Since 2018 Andy has been helping on piloting an interdisciplinary summer workshop with MIT and Advanced Functional Fibers of America (AFFOA) to help foster interdisciplinary collaboration, learning and research between designers and engineers.
Prior to teaching at FIT, Andy worked as a designer for more than a decade for luxury houses in France such as Hermès Sellier, Christian Lacroix and Zadig-et-Voltaire. He specialized in outerwear and leatherwear at Hermès and contributed to the consistent seasonal growth of the collections by creating best sellers throughout his experience there. At Christian Lacroix Andy was one of Mr. Lacroix’s right-hand designers overseeing the conception and development of ready-to-wear collections. At Zadig-et-Volatire he served as a Senior Collection Designer managing designers for both wovens and knits categories and establishing the menswear line.
Concurrent with his academic pursuits, Andy has been actively working in the apparel industry as a freelance design consultant. In 2019 Andy co-founded Artemis Active LLC., a design consulting company, specializing in offering businesses end-to-end solution in the development of fashion brands. Currently Artemis Active is helping a luxury gym based in New York and Los Angeles develop a premium athleisure line made in Italy.
Andy graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Fashion Institute of Technology and earned a Master’s in Fashion Design at l’Institut Français de la Mode in Paris, ranked 2nd in 2017 for Graduate Studies in Fashion by The Business of Fashion (BOF).
